Tom Hanks Razzies 2023 The Actor Receives Award For Role In Elvis

August 2024 · 3 minute read

Tom Hanks received Razzies for Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Screen Combo for his role in “Elvis” in March 2023.

The Razzie Awards, which honor the year’s worst films, were announced ahead of the Oscars ceremony on Sunday.

This year, the biographical drama “Blonde” led with eight nominations and won two Razzies for worst picture and worst screenplay.

The Razzies described the film as “misogynistic, salacious and fallacious” and criticized it for exploiting the memory of the late Marilyn Monroe.

However, the film’s star, Ana de Armas, is up for best actress in a leading role at the Academy Awards.

In a rare move, the Razzies also awarded themselves a prize for the first time in their history.

They chastised themselves for nominating 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong as worst actress of the year and removed her from the ballot.

The Razzies announced new voting guidelines that would preclude any performer or filmmaker who is a minor from being considered for a Razzie Award. They replaced Armstrong with themselves and won by a landslide.

Other winners at the Razzies included Tom Hanks, who was voted as the worst supporting actor and won the worst screen combo award for his role in “Elvis.”

At Sunday’s awards ceremony, the biographical drama is up for eight Oscars, including best makeup and hairstyling. However, many critics and fans criticized Hanks’ performance in the film, particularly his accent.

Jared Leto and Adria Arjona won Razzies for worst actor and worst supporting actress, respectively, for their roles in the Sony Marvel film “Morbius.”

The film was also criticized for its poor storytelling and lack of character development.

“Disney’s Pinocchio (NOT del Toro’s!)” won the worst remake, ripoff, or sequel award, while MGK (aka Colson Baker) and Mod Sun won for worst directors for “Good Mourning.”

In more positive news, Colin Farrell was named the recipient of this year’s Razzie Redeemer Award.

The award is given to a former Razzie contender who has reclaimed their wings and emerged from Razzie hell.

Farrell was nominated in 2004 for worst actor for his role in “Alexander the Great.” Still, he has now redeemed himself with his leading role in “Banshees of Inisherin,” which is up for several Oscars, including best actor.

The Razzies highlighted some of the year’s worst films and criticized the performances of some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

While the winners may not have been happy with their Razzie awards, it’s important to remember that these awards are meant to be a lighthearted way of recognizing the not-so-great moments in Hollywood.

As the industry moves forward, it will be interesting to see how filmmakers and performers respond to these criticisms and whether they use them as motivation to improve their work.
